Companies are increasingly using generative AI to staff jobs. As many as 99% of hiring managers say they use AI during the hiring process. And these hiring managers also see significant changes in their process efficiency by utilizing AI tools.
Alongside hiring practices, AI will also affect the job market itself. More than 30% of workers in the U.S. could have 50% or more of their tasks disrupted or replaced by generative AI. But how do you know if your role or the roles you’re hiring for could be affected?
These days, location is the most important factor.
Let’s explore some of the top industries and cities affected by implementation of AI in America.
Roles Affected By AI
In the past, generative AI has primarily assumed the role of automating routine tasks and skills common to lower-wage positions. However, new research shows that generative AI is actually most likely to affect the tasks of mid to high-paid professions rather than those of blue-collar workers.
Industries like computing, engineering, healthcare, law, finance, and education are more likely to be exposed to AI tools. The administrative tasks and cognitive capabilities required in these industries actually position people like lawyers, writers, coders, secretaries, and engineers to regularly utilize AI in their day-to-day jobs over professions that deal with manual or skilled labor.
In fact, the greater the level of pay and education, the greater the level of exposure to AI tools and implementation. This does not mean lower-paying jobs will not be affected by generative AI. The types of jobs with the greatest potential for automation are office and administrative support positions and business and financial operations roles. And women will likely be more affected than men due to the higher percentage of women in administrative and clerical jobs.

Cities Affected By AI Jobs
A Brookings Institute study from 2019 on the implementation of automated technologies and practices showed that these initial automations typically impacted lower-skill and lower-wage positions the most—especially in more rural southern and midwestern locations.
Generative AI jobs, on the other hand, operate completely differently. More recently, Brookings found that the roles most impacted by AI are found in office-oriented cities and their metro areas, like Silicon Valley in California. According to Brookings, some of the cities that could be most deeply affected by the rise of AI implementation are:
- Atlanta
- Austin
- Boise
- Denver
- Detroit
- Durham, N.C.
- Greenville, S.C.
- Louisville, K.Y.
- New York City
- Newark, N.J.
- Ogden, U.T.
- Salt Lake City
- Seattle
- Silicon Valley, California (San Francisco, San Jose)
- Washington D.C.
In San Jose alone, up to 43% of the workforce faces the risk of generative AI changing more than 50% of their responsibilities. Cities like Las Vegas, El Paso, Daytona Beach, and Toledo—whose metro areas have fewer offices—see a much lower potential in percentage of tasks automated by generative AI within jobs. Smaller communities like Hilton Head or Ocean City, N.J. also experience this lower potential.
These cities have the most to gain from generative AI tools. But they also risk more disruption to their workforces as a result.
