The interview process can be excruciating. There is a lot of preparation involved, tons of stress, and you’re likely to get put on the spot when the time comes.  

During these interviews, you’ll almost always be asked the question “why do you want to work here?”  

It’s one of the strategic interview questions hiring managers almost always ask. The answer can be difficult to muster if you haven’t planned to give a detailed response.

Pull from Your Research of The Company

Any time you have an interview set up, it’s wise to take a look at the company website and any other areas where you can find additional information about them, such as their mission statement, core values, and social media accounts. 

It’s also important for job seekers to research the company beyond just what’s on the company’s website or socials. Learn about the company’s reputation, its team members, training programs, and more thorough review sites or by reaching out to past or current employees. 

Further, analyze that information with the job opening in mind. What does the intended position do for the company? Sure, you know what the job requires, but where does that job fit into the vision and purpose of the company? 

Mentioning your research about the business is a great way to show that you have interest because it shows how much time you spent researching them before applying for an interview with them.  

If you didn’t conduct any research about why you want to work there before applying, it may be better not to mention anything at all. 

Identify Things That Resonate with You

There’s a good chance that something about the company’s mission aligns with your values. Even if the job doesn’t fully align with your career goals, there had to be something that sparked your personal interest and made you want to work there. 

Does the company have a strong devotion to community service? Do the company’s products help solve a problem you’re passionate about? Do you like the organization’s culture? 

Dig through the information at your disposal and piece together a list of things that you like about the company.  

Then, work those insights into your potential response.  

For example, you could say something like “I really like the company’s investment in the local community because I’ve always felt that it’s important to give back. I think that aligns with why your company takes on so many pro bono projects.” 

You could also say, “One thing I love about [company name] is how dedicated you are toward your customers. For example, the exceptional customer service you provide really resonated with me because of my own experience working in the customer service industry.” 

When identifying connections between your values and the company’s mission, make sure that you find a legitimate reason for why you want to work there. It’s easy to give lip service in situations like these, and hiring managers are used to those empty responses — so don’t fake it. 

If you spend time thinking about your own core values and how they match up with the particular company to which you’re applying, you’ll have a well-prepared answer that comes from a place of honesty rather than a place of deceit. 

Think About Your Reasons for Applying

Why do you need this job? Will it help you reach your career objectives? Where will your life be in the next five years if you take this job? 

These are questions to ask yourself before the job interview. Find clear answers to those questions, then ask yourself how that desire might resonate with the hiring manager. 

You may want to work for this company because you have a genuine interest in their products or services. Or maybe they were awarded some notable accomplishments and a chance to work with their production team excites you because you’ll be able to learn from the best.  

Whatever your reason, make sure to state it clearly so the hiring manager isn’t confused or unclear with your answer.  

A good example of this is, “I’m really interested in the work you do at [company name] because it aligns with my dream of working in environmental conservation. I’ve always been passionate about protecting our earth and your mission is one that’s close to my heart.” 

This answer not only explains why the job appeals to you, but also why hiring you should appeal to them. 

Don’t Be Afraid to State Your Goals

Don’t be afraid to talk about your own career goals when responding to the “why do you want to work here?” job interview question. 

Does this potential employer have training programs that can help you fast-track your career? What resources do they provide to help employees improve their skills? Is there an opportunity to grow into newer, bigger roles over time? 

These are all questions to take into consideration before crafting your response. 

For instance, if you’re applying for a customer service role but hope to be a successful manager within the next five years, tell them why.  

A good sample answer would be, “I know that I’m right for this position because it aligns with my career goals of being in management one day. Your company deeply values its employees and is always willing to invest in their growth, which is why I’m confident that this experience will help me work toward my future goals.” 

There’s nothing wrong with having ambitions. Inform the hiring manager what these ambitions are so that you can both be on the same page and can work toward achieving them together. 

Comment On Your Ability

If you’ve done your research, highlighted why the job appeals to you and why it’s a good fit for your career goals, then this step should be easy. You can simply comment on why they should take notice of your application because of how prepared you are to perform in this role. 

A great example would be: “I’m a great fit for this role because I have [insert relevant skills and experience] that will help me deliver on what you’re looking to achieve. And from my research, it seems like the company values some of those same qualities in potential employees.” 

By showcasing why they should hire you based off your stellar qualifications and past work experiences, you’re showing why you’d be successful in this position. 

Some people are fit to work in particular positions. Whether your interests have led you to develop relevant skills, or you’re just naturally inclined to do the kind of work, let the interviewer know why you feel confident and excited about your ability.  

Consider The Hiring Manager

A lot of people forget that they’re talking to a real human being when interviewing. Sure, you establish some rapport and conversation throughout the process, but some job seekers will still freeze up and go into autopilot when open-ended questions like “why do you want to work here?” come up.  

Instead of nervously rambling off the same old canned response, why not personalize it? Take a few seconds to consider why you’re talking to this person.  

Do they have years of experience in your industry or previous work history with your dream company? Maybe their background is related and he or she will be able to relate on some level. 

Or if you have a mutual connection, why not take advantage of it?  

A strong personal connection can influence the interviewer to believe that they know your personality and working style better than others. So why not use this knowledge to your benefit? 

Considering the hiring manager’s background, experience, and mutual connections will help you establish a better connection with the interviewer, making the “why do you want to work here?” question much less stressful. 

Don’t Be Too Short-Winded

One of the worst things you can do is answer “why do you want to work here?” with five or six words. There’s no way that will be enough information for them to get an idea why they should hire you over other candidates. 

Instead, give a well-rounded response about why this job opportunity would benefit both parties and how it aligns with your own goals.  

You can even go into why you’re excited about the company culture and what it would be like to work there—just make sure that these details are relevant to why YOU want to work here.  

Also keep in mind that you’re not the only candidate and there are other job seekers who want that same job. 

If your response doesn’t stand out to the hiring company, why would they choose you? Be genuine and give a thorough answer about why this job will be great for both parties involved.  

And if all else fails, don’t forget why it’s important! Employers are looking to hire someone who is willing to work hard and contribute.

The opportunity to join an incredible team and a company that’s been named ‘best place to work’ for five straight years is exactly what I’m looking for in my next job.”

“I’ve always been impressed by [company name’s] excellent track record when it comes to putting the customer first and consistently staying ahead of competitors at the same time. 

I want to work for a company that’s innovative and doesn’t settle with what’s already been done, because I think it’s important to explore new ideas.  

With more freedom and flexibility in my role, paired with my education and experience in marketing campaigns, I’m confident I can make an immediate impact on social media outreach efforts — and that’s why I’m excited about the opportunity to work for you.”
