Managing an international team offers clear advantages—access to global talent, broader perspectives, and around-the-clock productivity. But those benefits don’t automatically translate into strong working relationships.

When team members are separated by geography, time zones, and cultural norms, connection takes intention. Leaders who prioritize human connection create teams that communicate better, collaborate more effectively, and stay engaged for the long term.

Why Connection Matters on International Teams

Connection is the foundation of trust. Although effective communication with offshore teams is crucial, an absence of connection can often make this communication feel transactional—consisting only of quick updates, surface-level collaboration, and minimal engagement beyond assigned tasks.

Over time, this can lead to misunderstandings, slower decision-making, and disengagement. Distance, time zone challenges, and cultural differences can also quietly erode trust if leaders rely only on process and tools.

When people feel connected, they’re more likely to ask questions, challenge ideas respectfully, and share context that improves outcomes. Connection also helps bridge cultural and linguistic differences, reducing friction before it escalates into conflict.

6 Ways to Facilitate Connection When Managing an International Team

For leaders managing an international team, connection is a practical requirement for sustainable collaboration. Let’s break down some methods that can help you create real connections on your team.

1. Provide Ice-Breaker Conversations

Without in-person interaction, communication between team members can feel very stiff and lead to ineffective teamwork. Though it may seem counterproductive to focus on conversations outside of work topics, this can actually help your team bond and increase overall engagement and satisfaction.

Try starting meetings off with ice-breaker topics, such as asking team members to share their favorite hobby or the last show they binge-watched. By finding common ground and allowing your team the space to get to know each other on a more personal level, they’ll be able to make connections even across borders and time zones

2. Prioritize Inclusiveness

When managing international teams, it’s important to make sure that everyone feels heard and respected. Though it can be easy to accidentally prioritize those you share a time zone with, this can lead to an unfair working environment and breed resentment for other team members.

You can create an inclusive environment in simple ways like limiting regional slang to make it easier to overcome language barriers, being mindful when scheduling meetings to share the burden of inconvenience across time zones and making sure all team members are involved in the decision-making process.

3. Organize Virtual Team Building

Even though your team is spread across the globe, that doesn’t mean you can’t facilitate team building events—you just have to get a bit more creative with it! Schedule chats on a regular cadence where you pair team members off into breakout rooms to give them a chance to connect with employees they may not know very well.

You can also set themed meetings such as a “Bring Your Pet Day” to allow your team members to introduce their furry friends, or a pajama day or other themed dress-up sessions, breaking up the monotony of the workday and letting your team showcase their personality.

And virtual team building can go beyond the workplace, too! Try setting up a virtual happy hour where everyone gets to bring their favorite drink, virtual trivia nights, show-and-tell, or even a virtual talent show. This will help your team connect on a human level and build real bonds that can translate to a stronger culture and work environment.

4. Ensure Frequent Communication

Since international teams are separated by distance and time zone, it’s important to close that gap through intentional communication. Foster an environment where your team members feel comfortable asking questions that may arise while working.

Have frequent check-ins with your team members, consistent meetings, and follow-up emails to ensure nothing gets lost in translation, and everyone stays in the loop.

5. Facilitate Cultural Awareness

Understanding cultural differences and nuances is a big part of managing an international team. While it’s important as a leader to be aware of this, it’s equally important to create this understanding across your team as well.

Stay aware of cultural or religious holidays across your team and accommodate time off requests for those observing these events. And keep in mind that different cultures have different ways of working, so this may require you to embrace adaptability. As long as there is no negative impact on your team, stay open-minded about their different approaches to work.

Encourage your team to share parts of their culture with each other—not only will this mitigate any friction that could arise from cultural differences, but it will also help team members feel more connected.

6. Encourage Authenticity

If you’re authentic in your interactions as a leader, this will help your team members feel comfortable doing the same. Being open, honest, and ready to admit mistakes or obstacles will create a more understanding environment where team members can have more transparent interactions, leading to a more effective team overall.

This will create a culture of empathy, which is the building block of familiarity that allows your team to cultivate meaningful relationships. The more information you share authentically, the more your team members will follow suit, and this will create a heightened sense of understanding between everyone.
