Figure Out What Energizes You
When starting a new career, it’s important to consider a couple things: What are you passionate about? What kind of lifestyle do you want to live, and will a career change help you achieve this? Knowing what you’re looking for is a crucial step in making a successful career change.
Try taking courses on subjects that interest you. Shadow a friend or colleague within another field for a day or two to see if it’s the right fit. Consider looking at freelance, part-time work, or even internships in new fields. Discovering what feels best will help you make the right decision for your future.
Adjust Your Mindset
If you’ve been in your current industry for a long time, you’re probably used to having all the answers. But breaking into a new career path means there will be a gap between your knowledge and the level you aspire to—and it’s important to embrace that gap, not fear it.
A common desire people have for their careers is the opportunity to be challenged. Now that you have the chance, don’t run from it. Use your fresh perspective to learn new skills and knowledge without the burden of assumptions. Lean into that beginner’s mindset and welcome new possibilities.

If you’re looking to start a career in a completely different field, chances are you’ve seen plenty of job postings that fill you with worry. You may not have the exact experience they’re asking for, or the recommended certifications, but that shouldn’tmake you hesitate.
Instead of letting yourself feel unqualified, remember that most job descriptions are a wish list of skills and experience and not what a candidate needs to be successful. If anything, let them motivate you to expand your skill set for your desired industry,
Make New Connections
It’s likely that most of your current network falls into the same industry or role as you, especially if you’ve spent your entire career in the same field. While it’s nice to have these connections, it’s important to break out of your comfort zone and find people outside your existing network.
Talk to people who have careers you may want to pursue. They can offer unique insights and give you the courage to pursue your career switch. Plus, there’s a chance they may even help open the doors for new opportunities.
Zoom Out on Your Experience
The skills and experience you currently have may feel incredibly specific to your industry or field. But that doesn’t have to be the case—don’t focus on specific qualifications and look at the bigger picture instead. When you look at your work history, what are some common themes?
This can help you create a new narrative that facilitates your shift to a different career. Maybe you have expert social skills that you’ve used in your previous roles. Or maybe you’re able to assess what improvements need to be made for projects. Or you’re good at understanding complex problems and breaking them down into simple steps.
Whatever the case may be, focus on what you’re good at beyond the specific job duties. Find your specialty and use it to highlight how you would be a great addition to the industry you want to break into.
Stay Committed to Your Goals
Starting a new career and making such a massive shift may take longer than expected. It’s important to keep in mind that you may face setbacks during this time. But just because something is difficult doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing.
The only way out is through. Don’t let yourself deflate in the face of adversity—remember your end goal and stay dedicated to reaching it, even if you start to second-guess yourself. Progress comes from effort and consistency, so it’s important to not waver. Trust your instincts and focus on why you wanted to start a new career in the first place.
