Job Description
An employer is seeking a Systems Engineer with a focus on Free-Space Optical (FSO) Communications to support the full lifecycle development of advanced optical communication systems, from conceptual design through product phase-out. In this role, you will work in a fast‑paced, deliverable‑driven environment with a strong emphasis on system integration, verification, and test (I&T) across optical, RF, and hybrid communication architectures. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams, vendors, and end customers to manage requirements, develop technical documentation, and resolve technical challenges associated with line-of-sight, high-bandwidth optical communication systems.
The position includes hands-on involvement in integrating optical communication subsystems, aligning and validating free-space optical links, executing test procedures, and troubleshooting system-level performance issues in both lab and field environments. You will support end-to-end system verification, environmental and performance testing, and integration events, ensuring reliability across atmospheric conditions, platform motion, and multi-domain communication interfaces. Additional responsibilities include participation in design reviews, coordination with subcontractors, and support for on-site integration and test activities, with travel expected.
This role requires an active DoD security clearance and is ideal for a systems engineer with experience in free-space optics, optical communications, or advanced sensor/communications systems, along with a strong understanding of systems engineering fundamentals, requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, Jama), and the ability to deliver high-performance communication solutions in complex operational environments.
This role is offering $85-100/hr.

Bachelor of Science in a relevant Engineering field
6+ years of relevant work experience
Hands on experience working on Free Space Optics programs in a defense setting
Fiber Optic cable splicing experience
Experience working in an MBSE and Agile work environment
Active Secret Clearance
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
Experience working in Hybrid Satellite Communications, or Open Mission Systems Architecture
