Job Description

The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for leading field survey operations in support of large-scale industrial construction projects. This individual will oversee a survey crew performing layout, control, verification, and as-built surveys to ensure construction activities align with project specifications, engineering drawings, and design requirements.
The Survey Crew Chief will work closely with Project Engineers, Construction Managers, Superintendents, and subcontractors to establish site control networks, verify elevations and coordinates, and support successful project execution. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical surveying expertise, leadership skills, and experience working in fast-paced industrial environments.

Required Skills & Experience

Lead daily operations of the survey crew and assign work activities.
Establish, maintain, and verify horizontal and vertical control networks.
Perform construction layout for foundations, underground utilities, structural steel, equipment setting, roads, and site infrastructure.
Operate and troubleshoot surveying equipment including Total Stations, GPS/GNSS systems, robotic instruments, and digital levels.
Review engineering drawings, site plans, and specifications to ensure accurate field layout.
Perform topographic, boundary, control, and as-built surveys.
Verify contractor work and ensure installations comply with project tolerances and design requirements.
Generate field notes, survey reports, sketches, and documentation.
Coordinate survey activities with construction personnel and project management.
Perform quantity verification and measurements as required.
Ensure all survey data is collected, processed, and documented accurately.
Identify and communicate discrepancies between field conditions and design documents.
Support quality control and turnover activities through accurate survey verification.
Maintain survey equipment calibration and inventory.
Promote and enforce project safety requirements and safe work practices.


Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.
Associate's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
5+ years of surveying experience supporting industrial, heavy civil, energy, infrastructure, or commercial construction projects.
2+ years of experience leading survey crews.
Proficiency with Total Stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, robotic survey instruments, and digital levels.
Experience interpreting engineering drawings, civil plans, grading plans, and construction specifications.
Knowledge of coordinate systems, control networks, and construction stakeout procedures.
Ability to perform field calculations and verify survey accuracy.
Strong understanding of construction means and methods.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout project sites.

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting refinery, petrochemical, lithium processing, semiconductor, data center, manufacturing, or power generation projects.
CST (Certified Survey Technician) certification preferred.
Professional Land Surveyor (PLS/RPLS) license preferred but not required.
Experience with drone survey technology and LiDAR scanning.
Knowledge of industrial equipment layout and structural steel erection support.
Experience supporting projects exceeding $100M in construction value.
