Job Description
As a VDC/BIM Steel Detailer / Steel Designer, you’ll translate structural design intent into highly constructible 3D models and coordinated shop drawings for structural and miscellaneous steel systems. You’ll collaborate with project managers, engineers, field leaders, and fabrication to drive coordination, prefabrication, and accurate installation.

Key Responsibilities:

Build fabrication-level 3D models (LOD 400) for structural steel and miscellaneous metals using Autodesk Advance Steel
Interpret structural drawings, specifications, RFIs, and connection design criteria
Apply company standards for modeling practices, naming conventions, and file organization within Autodesk Construction Cloud / BIM 360
Generate fully annotated shop drawings, erection drawings, CNC files, and bills of material (BOMs) for fabrication
Detail bolted and welded steel connections, embeds, plates, supports, stairs, ladders, and handrails
Support coordination and clash detection with GC and other trades using federated models
Maintain issue logs, viewpoints, and documentation of model decisions and revisions
Respond to RFIs, support change orders, and update as-builts / record models
Perform QA/QC checks on models and drawings (connections, clearances, tolerances, camber, bolt patterns, weld types)
Coordinate with PMs, engineers, fabricators, and field leadership to align deliverables with project schedules and milestones
Contribute to detailing standards, content libraries, and continuous improvement initiatives


Tools You’ll Use:

Autodesk Advance Steel (primary detailing platform)
Autodesk Revit (Structure)
Navisworks and/or Revizto (coordination & clash detection)
Autodesk Construction Cloud / BIM 360
Bluebeam

Required Skills & Experience

3–7+ years of structural steel detailing/design experience for a steel fabricator or structural contractor
Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Advance Steel
Proven experience producing LOD 400 fabrication-level models and shop drawings
Strong background detailing:

Structural steel frames
Complex steel connections
Miscellaneous metals (stairs, rails, ladders, embeds, plates)


Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, specifications, and connection requirements
Working knowledge of steel fabrication and erection processes
Experience supporting RFIs, revisions, change orders, and as-built updates
Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills
Ability to manage deadlines and collaborate across office, shop, and field teams
Stable work history (no frequent job hopping)

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

Experience detailing complex or non-standard steel connections
Familiarity with applicable codes and standards:

AISC, AWS, ASTM, and local building codes


Experience supporting large-scale projects such as data centers, industrial, or semiconductor facilities
Fabrication shop or field erection experience
Ability to assist with material takeoffs, constructability reviews, or estimating support
Contribution to Advance Steel macros, templates, and detailing standards
