Overview
An upstream Oil & Gas company is seeking a Data Engineer to support their Real-Time Operations team, focused on the SCADA Data Mart (SDM) platform. This system ingests telemetry data from field devices and operations, consisting of ~98% time-series data and ~2% business data.
This role will be 70% maintenance/support and 30% development, with a strong focus on ensuring platform stability, performance, and scalability. The team also has plans to modernize and re-architect the platform for future growth. This position is required to sit onsite 5 days / week in downtown Houston. Based on knowledge and years of experience, this position offers an hourly pay rate range of $50-65/hr.

Required Skills & Experience
Experience working with time-series databases (VictoriaMetrics preferred; InfluxDB, TimescaleDB, Prometheus, etc.)
Strong understanding of time-series data modeling, including retention, aggregation, and high-ingestion workloads
Strong SQL and query optimization skills, including time-windowed queries
Experience building and maintaining data pipelines (ETL/ELT) and/or real-time streaming pipelines (Kafka, Spark, etc.)
Ability to support and troubleshoot high-volume, real-time data platforms
Experience with performance tuning, scalability, and storage optimization
Proficiency with Python programming
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and modern infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD)
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
Experience in Oil & Gas, energy, or industrial environments
Familiarity with SCADA systems (CygNet, Ignition, Wonderware)
Experience working with industrial telemetry or sensor data
Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (MQTT, OPC, TCP/IP)
Experience supporting or building high-availability, mission-critical systems
Exposure to platform monitoring / observability tools and practices
