Job Description

Job Description:

This Traffic Engineer role focuses on roadway and drainage design for projects across Michigan, supporting DLZ’s growing transportation team in Lansing or Waterford. The position is hands-on, involving design work, plan preparation, and cost estimating using tools like OpenRoads Designer and Civil 3D, all within MDOT and local agency standards. You’ll collaborate with engineers and technical staff, review drawings for accuracy, and occasionally support field visits and construction oversight. The role also includes following quality and safety procedures while assisting with client updates and project progress. Over time, you’ll take on more responsibility, help mentor junior staff, and contribute to business development efforts. This is a great opportunity for someone with 3–5 years of experience who is working toward their PE and wants to grow technically and professionally. This role will be designing the road itself (lanes, alignment, layout) as well as what keeps the water off (pipes, drains, ditches, etc.)

Day to Day:

• Perform roadway and drainage design work for transportation projects across Michigan
• Develop and coordinate plan sets, specifications, cost estimates, and project schedules in line with MDOT standards
• Use OpenRoads Designer and/or Civil 3D to create detailed designs and construction documents
• Collaborate with engineers and technical teams to review drawings and ensure quality and accuracy
• Conduct occasional field reviews and site visits to support project execution
Support client updates, follow QC/safety procedures, and gradually mentor junior team members as you grow in the role
