Job Description
A client is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to serve as the subject matter expert for U.S. multi‑state payroll. This role will partner closely with Finance and HR to ensure payroll is processed accurately, compliantly, and on time, while also helping improve processes, collaborate effectively, and guide the organization on payroll standards and best practices. This position does not have direct reports but works cross‑functionally with teams across the organization and reports directly to the Controller.

This role is responsible for addressing payroll‑related items such as payroll taxes, workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance, and leave administration, while ensuring compliance with varying state laws and regulations.
On a daily basis, the Payroll Manager supports onboarding and offboarding activities, ensuring employee data is entered correctly in Workday, W‑4 forms are completed accurately, and final payments are processed appropriately upon termination. They test and validate direct deposits prior to payroll runs and act as the go‑to resource for payroll‑related questions across the organization.
In addition to processing responsibilities, the Payroll Manager plays a key role in auditing and monitoring payroll compliance, including supporting minimum wage reviews and other internal or external audits. They work cross‑functionally to identify process gaps, reduce friction, and implement improvements. The role also includes training managers and employees on payroll processes, approvals, and timelines, participating in employee orientation, and serving as a trusted guide and educator while maintaining a professional, team‑oriented approach.
