Job Description
SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering) Technician III is responsible for the field operations of
locating and designating underground utilities, operating specialized equipment
like vacuum excavation trucks and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and managing field
crews on construction projects. Key duties include performing utility research, creating
field sketches, communicating with clients and utility owners, and ensuring safety
compliance, with a strong emphasis on leadership and training junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
• Utility Locating & Designation: Operates radio-detection, geophysical (GPR), and
other equipment to precisely locate and designate all types of underground utilities
(gas, water, sewer, fiber, etc.)
• Working knowledge and understanding of ASCE 38-02 & ASCE 38-22
• Vacuum Excavation: Uses a vacuum excavation truck to safely and efficiently
expose underground utilities for clearer designation.
• Field Crew Management: Supervises and directs the activities of junior field crew
members, providing training and guidance.
• Data Collection & Documentation: Creates legible field sketches, performs
measurements, documents daily work, and maintains accurate records.
• Safety & Traffic Control: Establishes safe work zones, implements maintenance of
traffic (MOT) plans, and adheres to all applicable safety standards and protocols.
• Client & Utility Coordination: Communicates effectively with clients, utility owners,
surveyors, and property owners to ensure project coordination and resolve field
issues.
• Records Research: Conducts records research to obtain existing documentation on
underground utilities, such as utility records and construction plans.

Skills & Qualifications
• Experience: Typically requires a minimum of 4-5 years of experience in utility
locating or SUE field work.
• Read and interpret utility records, as-built drawings, and other project plans to aid
in the identification and mapping process.
• Ability to work independently with little supervision
• Collect, record, and document utility data, including locations, depths, and types of
utilities, and create field sketches, maps, and reports.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency with utility locating equipment, GPR, electromagnetic
locators, and vacuum excavation trucks.
• Computer & Communication Skills: Basic computer skills, ability to learn new
software, and strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Leadership & Training: Proven ability to mentor and train junior crew members.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to perform tasks requiring frequent walking, standing
for long periods, and occasional heavy lifting.
• Ability to travel out of town and work overtime
