Job Description

Insight Global partners with a large local utility company and is looking for a Senior Protection Engineer to support complex system protection engineering work. This role requires mastery of journey-level protection engineering responsibilities and the ability to work with a low level of training, direction, and review from senior engineers and peers.

This position is responsible for providing technical protection engineering support for routine and complex projects, as well as maintenance and operations support. Responsibilities include issuing protection requirements, developing relay and automatic settings, processing clearances, investigating relay operations, and supporting root cause analysis during system events. The engineer will work independently under general direction to meet assigned objectives and may apply creative or non-standard approaches to resolve complex technical issues.

The Senior Protection Engineer will collaborate with internal teams, vendors, manufacturers, consultants, other utilities, and external industry groups as needed. This role may also lead meetings, represent the group, mentor lower-level engineers, and support professional affiliations such as PSRC or IEEE to stay current on industry standards, trends, and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Performs protection engineering work on large and complex projects.
• Provides technical protection engineering support for routine and complex projects.
• Issues protection requirements, relay settings, and automatic settings.
• Processes clearances and investigates relay operations.
• Performs root cause analysis and makes recommendations to address local and system-wide impacts during emergencies.
• Resolves complex technical problems using independent judgment and creative or non-standard approaches when needed.
• Plans work independently under general direction to meet assigned objectives.
• Coaches, directs, and assists technical employees and project teams.
• May act as a team leader for protection engineering work.
• Mentors lower-level protection engineers.
• Leads and/or attends meetings representing the group and supporting project execution.
• Works with all levels of internal personnel to exchange information, gain cooperation, and support engineering decisions.
• Communicates with vendors, manufacturers, other utilities, and consultants on non-routine technical issues.
• May participate in professional affiliations such as PSRC or IEEE to stay informed on industry trends, developments, and procedures.
• May represent the company on committees or industry groups.

Hybrid schedule on site 2x/week + site visits as needed

Required Skills & Experience

• BS Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited curriculum in the US or the equivalent from outside the US
• 8 years of cumulative experience in the field of system protection
Experience with complex protection systems + root cause analysis
Proven ownership of large/critical projects or outages

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

• Current and active California PE license
• Proficiency in electrical engineering concepts, theories and practices.
• Broad understanding of electrical circuits, relays and other systems involved in identifying and developing effective protection schemes.
• Knowledge of various types of generation resources as it pertains to protection applications and modeling.
• Knowledge of substation design, system operation and transmission & distribution (T&D) planning experiences.
• Ability to follow technical procedures and documentation.
• Strong technical and analytical skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Initiative and results orientation
• Proficient with MS Professional Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point)
