Job Description

The Technical Artist will support the design, development, and production of 2D, 3D, interactive, and immersive visualizations based on neuroimaging and biomedical data. The successful candidate will help bridge creative design and technical implementation, developing workflows that translate data into accurate, polished, and engaging visual content. Projects may include brain renderings, tractography visualizations, 3D anatomical models, animations, interactive applications, immersive visualizations, data-driven graphics, educational media, and visual assets for scientific presentations, publications, websites, events, and outreach campaigns.

This role requires both strong artistic judgment and technical fluency. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with scientific data and software pipelines, collaborating with researchers to understand visual goals, and producing visuals that balance scientific accuracy with clarity and aesthetic impact. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, deadline-driven, and an active participant in advancing highly collaborative projects.

Key Responsibilities
Scientific Visualization & 3D Production
• Create high-quality 3D visualizations of neuroimaging, anatomical, and biomedical data.
• Develop renderings, animations, and interactive assets that clearly communicate complex scientific concepts.
• Work with MRI/diffusion MRI, tractography, brain surfaces, and volumetric datasets.
• Produce visuals for presentations, publications, web, video, social media, and outreach materials.
• Ensure scientific accuracy while enhancing clarity, composition, lighting, and storytelling.

Technical Art & Pipeline Development
• Build and maintain workflows for importing, processing, rendering, and presenting 3D scientific data.
• Integrate datasets into visualization platforms, immersive environments, and interactive applications.
• Develop shaders, lighting, materials, and optimization strategies for real-time and rendered outputs.
• Troubleshoot data, performance, rendering, and animation issues.
• Establish reusable tools, templates, and best practices.

Interactive & Immersive Media
• Support interactive visualizations and immersive experiences for research, education, and outreach.
• Contribute to projects involving large-format displays, VR/AR, and immersive systems.
• Collaborate with technical and scientific teams to enable intuitive exploration of complex data.
• Optimize assets for real-time performance while maintaining quality.

Collaboration & Communication
• Partner with faculty, researchers, developers, and communications teams to meet project goals.
• Translate scientific concepts into accessible visual solutions for diverse audiences.
• Participate in planning, reviews, and feedback cycles.
• Communicate scope, timelines, and technical constraints clearly.
• Ensure outputs align with branding, communication goals, and scientific standards.

Asset Management & Documentation
• Organize and maintain files, assets, and workflows.
• Document processes, tools, and pipelines for reuse.
• Prepare final assets for multiple formats and distribution channels.
• Ensure quality control across all deliverables.

Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelors Degree in related field
• 2-5 years of experience as a technical artist/ graphic designer
• Experience with medical, scientific, biomedical, or anatomical visualization (understanding of the brain anatomy)
• 3D Production: Experience with tools like Blender, Maya, Cinema 4D, or Houdini to create and animate 3D content.
• Real-Time / Interactive Platforms: Familiarity with Unity, Unreal Engine, TouchDesigner, or similar tools for building interactive or immersive experiences.
• Design & Creative Tools: Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and video editing tools like Final Cut Pro.
• Strong understanding of 3D fundamentals, including modeling, materials, lighting, rendering, animation, camera composition, and scene optimization.
• Ability to work with complex data, technical constraints, and interdisciplinary teams.
• Portfolio or work samples demonstrating relevant 3D, technical art, visualization, animation, or interactive media experience.
• Understanding of the brain anatomy

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

• Familiarity with neuroimaging data or concepts, including MRI, diffusion MRI, tractography, brain surfaces, segmentation, or volumetric imaging.
• Experience with visualization or analysis tools such as FreeSurfer, FSL, AFNI, 3D Slicer, ITK-SNAP, ParaView, VTK, Python-based visualization libraries, or similar platforms.
• Experience scripting or programming in Python, C#, JavaScript, GLSL/HLSL, or other relevant languages.
• Experience creating shaders, procedural materials, particle systems, or custom visualization tools.
