Job Description

Insight Global is partnering with a large local utility as they grow their Electric Engineering organization to support the surge in electricity demand, driven by AI-focused data centers, rapid electric vehicle (EV) adoption, and massive grid modernization efforts. We are seeking experienced Electrical Commissioning / Protection & Control Technicians to support utility projects across PG&E territory. This role focuses heavily on testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting electrical systems rather than installation work.

Key Responsibilities

Perform commissioning, testing, and validation of electrical systems, including protection and control schemes
Troubleshoot wiring, conduits, control circuits, and system issues (not primary wiring/installation work)
Conduct functional testing and inspection of electrical equipment prior to energization [cleanpower.org]
Read and interpret electrical schematics, relay logic, and protection diagrams [simplyhired.com]
Support substation, transmission, and power distribution systems
Utilize testing equipment (relay testing tools, multimeters, etc.) to diagnose and resolve issues
Document findings, test results, and corrective actions
Partner with engineering teams, contractors, and third-party vendors during commissioning activities

4x10 schedule with approximately 10% overtime
Field-based work across utility sites
Travel required throughout PG&E service territory
Service Territory: Bakersfield to Redding (approx. 10 sites total)

Required Skills & Experience

3–5+ years of hands-on electrical field experience
Experience with:
Commissioning activities
Protection & Control (P&C) systems
Power distribution / utility infrastructure


Strong troubleshooting experience with control systems and electrical circuits
Ability to read and work from single-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

IBEW Membership (Local / PG&E experience strongly preferred)
PG&E Apprentice Electrical Technician Test (ETT) familiarity or completion
Prior Navy / military electrical background, especially in utilities or power systems
Experience working for or alongside CANUS or similar third-party vendors
OSHA certifications (OSHA 10, OSHA 30, etc.)
Experience with relay testing, SCADA, or substation systems
