The Design Technician’s role is to produce packaging prototypes for customer design requests using various prototyping equipment and designer-provided drawings and specifications. This person partners daily with project teams of project managers, designers, and engineers on multiple requests, ensuring they are communicating progress status and delivering high-quality prototypes on time. Additionally, this role is responsible for the safety and efficiency of our design lab operations, including equipment maintenance and general organization. The Design Technician is a self-starter who is positive, innovative, and passionate about customer service and operational excellence
Key Responsibilities:
• Create prototypes from CAD files, specification drawings, or other instructions, while assuring quality and technical standards are met
• Operate CAD cutting tables and other prototyping equipment
• Collaborate with project team on project plan, prioritizing tasks, and proactively communicating through the life of the project
• Organize project files and other assets appropriately
• Maintain Design lab, performing routine maintenance on equipment, storage, inventory, and work area
• Preserve proper levels of raw material inventory and prototyping related supplies
• Responsible for shipping and receiving procedures
• Promote Design safety procedures, in alignment with Veritiv’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) policies
• Assist in other duties as necessary, such as facility support, simple design tasks, basic reports, or testing support
Day-to-Day:
• Receive and execute tasks from Project Managers
• Proactively communicate status updates and issues
• Balance multiple projects and priorities
• Maintain lab: equipment upkeep, material audits, organization
• Produce physical samples using CAD tables and prototyping tools
Work Environment:
• Mix of office, lab, and warehouse settings
• Work at moderate heights
• Frequent lifting/moving materials (up to 50 lbs)
• Use of PPE required

Required Skills & Experience
Must Haves:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• 2–3 years of relevant work experience
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
• Strong understanding of dimensions, measurements, and material calculations
• Hands-on, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working with equipment
• Physically able to lift 50+ lbs
• Strong attention to detail with solid analytical and organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities
• Strong problem-solving and customer service mindset
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills; team-oriented with ability to work independently
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint)
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
Nice-to-Have:
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree
• CAD experience or exposure
• Experience with design or prototyping software (Adobe Suite, Esko ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)
• Mechanical or electrical experience
• Packaging design experience, certification, or related education
