Job Summary
Insight Global client is seeking an experienced Traveling Diesel Mechanic (Mechanic II) to support mobile diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs across Northern California. This role is ideal for a skilled technician who can work independently in the field, handle advanced mechanical issues, and serve as a technical resource for junior team members.
The Mechanic II will perform complex diagnostics and repairs on light and heavy equipment while working in a variety of outdoor and jobsite environments, including exposure to heat, cold, rain, dust, and uneven terrain. Travel will be based on job site locations throughout Northern California.

Key Responsibilities

Perform advanced diagnostics and repairs on vehicle systems, including diesel engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, and HVAC systems, with minimal supervision
Operate as a mobile mechanic, conducting field diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on-site
Lead small teams on larger repair projects, coordinating tasks and ensuring quality standards
Mentor and support Junior Mechanics and Mechanic I staff on repair techniques and best practices
Communicate clearly and professionally with customers regarding repairs and maintenance needs
Conduct preventive maintenance on light and heavy equipment
Perform metal fabrication and structural repairs, including:

MIG, TIG, and stick welding
Cutting and plasma work
Fabrication of brackets, mounts, guards, and structural reinforcements
Custom equipment modifications and repair solutions


Maintain accurate records of work performed and parts used within the fleet management system
Assist with parts inventory management and quality control
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment, ensuring proper tool storage

Required Skills & Experience

Qualifications, Skills & Requirements

3–5 years of hands-on experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, including advanced diagnostics; mobile mechanic experience preferred
Strong proficiency in reading schematics and using advanced diagnostic and scan tools
In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, electrical, transmission, and HVAC systems
Advanced welding, cutting, and fabrication skills
Proven ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues with strong problem-solving and time-management skills
Experience mentoring or training technicians in a professional setting
Ability to work independently in mobile, field-based, and outdoor environments
Willingness to work flexible schedules, extended hours, and in inclement weather as needed
High School Diploma or GED required; advanced certifications such as ASE Master Technician or system-specific certifications preferred
Valid Class A Driver’s License preferred (not required)
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Card
Must pass pre-employment background check and drug screening
Physical ability to lift and carry 50 pounds or more, climb on and around trucks and equipment, secure cargo using chains and load-binding devices, sit for extended periods, and wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE)
