By the end of 2025, more than 100 mobile operators around the world had formed partnerships with satellite providers, resulting in dozens of live services already reaching the market. What was once viewed as a niche technology is becoming part of a broader conversation about how telecom providers can extend coverage, improve resilience, and expand access in hard-to-reach locations. 

The new space race? Satellite connectivity.

That does not mean satellites are replacing fiber, 5G, or traditional wireless infrastructure. Instead, telecom leaders are increasingly exploring how satellite connectivity can complement existing networks and help close coverage gaps that terrestrial infrastructure alone cannot always solve.

How Satellites Function Within Telecom

For most telecom organizations, satellites are best understood as an extension of the network rather than a standalone alternative to it. 

Traditional wireless networks rely on cell towers, fiber routes, and other ground-based infrastructure to deliver connectivity. Satellites can help fill in the spaces where building and maintaining that infrastructure is challenging due to geography, population density, cost, or environmental factors. This makes satellite technology particularly valuable in remote rural areas, disaster response scenarios, transportation corridors, offshore environments, and other locations where continuous terrestrial coverage may be difficult to achieve. 

Today’s telecom industry is largely focused on two satellite approaches. 

The first is low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks, which use constellations of satellites positioned closer to Earth than traditional geostationary satellites. These networks are designed to provide broadband connectivity with lower latency and broader coverage. 

The second is direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity, which allows compatible mobile devices to connect with satellites when traditional cellular coverage is unavailable. Interest in D2D services has accelerated as operators explore new ways to reduce dead zones and improve emergency communications

In practice, satellites and 5G are increasingly viewed as complementary technologies. The GSMA has identified non-terrestrial networks (NTN) as an emerging component of both current 5G and future wireless ecosystems, helping extend connectivity beyond the reach of ground-based infrastructure.

Why Satellite Connectivity Is Accelerating

Several factors are driving renewed interest in satellite connectivity across the telecom industry. 

Investment is increasing across the connectivity ecosystem. Mobile operators, satellite providers, cloud companies, and infrastructure investors are all exploring opportunities in satellite-enabled communications. S&P Global analysts note that satellite connectivity has moved beyond the proof-of-concept stage and is now entering a period focused on deployment and commercialization. 

Regulatory momentum is also helping accelerate the market. In April 2026, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reported more than $28 billion in deal flow across spectrum assets tied to direct-to-device connectivity initiatives over the previous 18 months, highlighting the scale of industry interest. 

Most importantly, satellite connectivity is gaining traction because it addresses practical telecom challenges. 

For providers, satellites can help reach underserved locations, strengthen service continuity during natural disasters, support emergency communications, and improve coverage in areas where tower construction may not be economically viable. For enterprises, satellite connectivity can support field operations, transportation networks, energy infrastructure, agriculture, and IoT deployments operating beyond traditional coverage areas. 

The conversation has expanded from connecting remote communities to building a more resilient and flexible connectivity ecosystem.

What Comes Next for Satellites in Telecom 

The next decade of telecom will likely contain greater integration between terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks rather than the dominance of one connectivity model over another. 

As standards continue to evolve and partnerships expand, satellite capabilities are expected to become more tightly integrated with existing telecom infrastructure. Telecom providers including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Vodafone, and Rakuten increasingly view satellite connectivity as part of a broader hybrid network strategy that combines fiber, wireless, fixed wireless access, cloud infrastructure, and non-terrestrial networks to deliver connectivity where and when it is needed. 

At the same time, expectations should remain realistic. Early D2D services are best suited for use cases such as messaging, emergency communications, and targeted coverage extension rather than replacing traditional mobile broadband at scale. 

What seems increasingly clear is that satellites are becoming another strategic tool in the telecom toolkit. For organizations focused on expanding access, improving resilience, and supporting a growing number of connected devices, satellite connectivity is likely to play a meaningful role alongside existing technologies.
