Job Description

Position Overview
Insight Global is looking for a Middleware Engineer to remotely join one of their Life Insurance clients' based in Metro Detroit. This person will be the main middleware support while most of the team transitions to a more Devops environment. This role will not be on-call to start, but it may be down the line. They will be serving as technical lead and primary point of contact for enterprise applications. Along with that, they'll be responsible for design, customization, and implementation of secure, scalable J2EE applications across Linux and Windows. Also, they will own deployment strategy, environment stability, performance tuning, and system reliability. Lastly, they will partner closely with internal teams and vendors to resolve issues and improve middleware environments.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities
• Deploy and integrate Java/J2EE applications across dev, test, and production environments
• Automate deployments and environment configurations
• Troubleshoot complex system issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement fixes
• Monitor performance and conduct capacity planning for multi-tier applications
• Participate in design discussions and middleware solution architecture decisions
• Maintain and improve deployment/integration standards and processes
• Support production environments and resolve escalated issues/tickets
• Document system architecture, processes, and procedures
• Develop and test disaster recovery plans
Continuously evaluate and implement improvements to increase uptime and stability

Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education. Required Skills & Experience

Must-Haves
• 5+ years in middleware engineering / application support environments
• Strong experience with IBM middleware stack (WebSphere Application Server required)
• Hands-on experience with WebSphere (WAS ND, Liberty, clustering, deployments)
• Experience supporting Linux and Windows server environments
• Solid understanding of API Gateway / API integrations
• Experience with middleware patching, upgrades, and SSL/certificate management
• Strong troubleshooting across application, middleware, OS, and network layers
• Experience with IBM MQ or similar messaging platforms
• Deployment and environment management experience across Dev/Test/Prod
Ability to monitor, analyze, and improve system performance and stability

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

Plusses
• Experience with IBM DataPower or other API Gateway solutions
• Hands-on experience with SolarWinds or similar monitoring tools (building out monitoring preferred)
• Broader IBM ecosystem exposure (integration tools, messaging, etc.)
• Experience with automation tools (Ansible, Jenkins, etc.)
• Exposure to high availability environments (load balancing, clustering, failover)
• Experience in building or enhancing monitoring/observability solutions
• Background in insurance or financial services environments
Familiarity with DevOps transformations / modernization efforts
