Didn’t get the job you really wanted? It happens! Competition for great opportunities may be tough at times, so it’s important to avoid making simple mistakes when interviewing that can accidentally cost you the role.
Our Professional Recruiters weighed in on some of the top reasons they find candidates may not have been chosen for the job.
Lack of elaboration
One of the biggest mistakes people make on interviews is not elaborating on their experience when asked a question. Prove that you know what you are doing by having concrete examples you can elaborate and articulate on.
You were forgettable
Your interviewer will talk to a lot of candidates before filling the position. You must be able to stand out from the crowd. Your answers could have been too general or unsophisticated. They lacked the substance and examples that you need to set yourself apart from the competition.
Lack of interest
You interviewer may not have been convinced that you were genuinely interested in the particular opportunity. Convey that you want the position and would be motivated to excel in the role long-term.
You shared too much
Usually, it’s best to keep it brief and general. Avoid the impulse to over-explain. Don’t overshare about previous positions. You’ve heard it time and time again: “Do not speak negatively about your past employers.” However, candidates still make this mistake often.
